I have a huge back log of items to renew because of a three week road trip out west. Here is a picture from Crater Lake.
The renewing issue can be conflicting for different types of handmade sellers on Etsy. I know there is much debate about whether renewing is an effective or ineffective form of advertising because the Etsy search engine gives priority to new and renewed items. For sellers like me, who are just trying to cover their cost, renewing is pretty simple. I primarily renew items when they expire except around holidays like Christmas or Valentines Day.
The month of July offers a nice opportunity for a seller to take advantage of renewing and get extra traction around the Holidays. How does this two birds with one stone work? When an item is posted on Etsy it automatically expires after four months. Four months after July is November!
Therefore if you renew an item on July 21st it will expire on November 21st if it hadn’t sold. That means when you renew the item you can take advantage of the peak-shopping season! I try to post many new items and renew items everyday from mid-July to mi-August. If I have items that will expire in early June sometimes I will let them sit in the expired listings area until mid-July rolls around.

This great dress is ideal for the summer and maybe listing or renewing it in late winter can take advantage of peak selling time
This tactic on renewing can also be used to take advantage of other holidays. If you have goods that are seasonal renew them or list them roughly four months before the peak-selling season. This will get your shop up and running and allow you to take advantage of the renewing cycle. This tactic could also get you some early sales from people that are excited that XYZ is just around the corner. If you are worried that listing a bunch of stuff early won’t help you then you could try having an “Early Bird” discount coupon on Etsy to get rid of over stock stuff from last year.
Many people on Etsy gripe about renewing and paying renewing fees, and this group includes me to a degree. At the same time if you know how the system works take advantage of it when it makes sense. Lining up renewals to hit prime shopping times is a good way to save money and have solid marketing.
