Lighting a Smith Little Torch Propane and Oxygen Set for Disposable Tanks can be a little tricky.   For people like me that always used a torch tank system with a gauge using one without a gauge can be a difficult transition.  An advantage of no-gauge is it is one less piece of equipment that you have to own and maintain.

The first step to lighting any torch is safety.  Make sure you have your goggles, apron and a mask, if needed, on.   Then grab your striker, which is what your chemistry teacher high school used to light a Bunsen burner.  Put the striker at easy access because you will need it latter.

Turn the valve for the propane tank on then turn it off a little.  As a note the only time you have the valve completely open is when the tank is almost empty.  After the tank is a little open then turn the knob on the hand piece for the propane to open.  Let out a little bit of gas then light the propane.

The reason why I turn the propane on first is because the oxygen won’t light without the propane lit first.  Then adjust the flame to the right size.  When the propane burns on its own it tends to curve upwards.  It is mostly a yellow flame with a little bit of blue at the base near the torch tip.

Turning the oxygen on can be a little bit more difficult.  First the oxygen likes to come out with a lot more force and tends to blow the flame out.  When flame is blown out make sure to turn off the propane and oxygen on the hand piece.  Then readjust the valve on the oxygen tank and try again.  Just keep readjusting the oxygen valve until you get the perfect straight blue flame.

Now after you finish using the torch you need to burn it out.  Burning out stands for igniting the gas that still in the hoses.   The first step is turning off both of the tanks by turning both of the valves to off on both tanks.  Then turn on the propane from the hand piece and light it.  Then turn on the oxygen on the hand piece and light it.  Wait till all of the gas is completely burned out.  There will usually be a loud popping sound, depending on how gas was still in the hoses, once it completely burns out and the flame vanishes.

Remember that tip and the base of the tip is hot after use.  I have burned myself a couple of times not letting the tip cool down before removing it.  Also don’t place it on anything that it could melt like a plastic bag.  For a demonstration on how to light a Smith Little Torch Propane and Oxygen Set for Disposable Tanks watch the above video.
